Softball Conditioning Tips for Coaches and Players
Every softball team needs to be well-conditioned if they wish to be able to compete with other teams in their league. Softball conditioning helps them last for the entirety of the game and endure extreme conditions, both of which could help turn the game in their favor.
Some teams realize this fact, but somehow tend to overdo things. Others, meanwhile, don’t appreciate the value of conditioning which immediately becomes evident when they play the game.
Here are some softball conditioning tips that will help you and your team play the game better for longer.
Keep Your Training as Varied as Possible
It’s good to focus on certain aspects of the game or train particular muscles used in softball. But if you’re a coach working with a softball team, keep your training as varied as possible. There are several reasons for doing this.
First, varied training keeps things fresh for your team. Do the same exercises over and over again and your team will eventually get bored and fail to appreciate the purpose of those exercises.
Another reason for varying your team’s softball conditioning exercises is to keep them free from injuries. When your players train the same muscles repeatedly, the wear and tear will eventually take its toll and could result to pulled muscles, torn ligaments and the likes.
Know Why You’re doing Certain Exercises
There are two reasons why you should know the purpose of the exercises you use to train your players.
First is that, when you know the purpose of an exercise and tell it to your players, they will appreciate your softball conditioning exercises even more. Thus, they’d be more receptive to everything that you’re telling them to do.
Another thing is that, you would immediately know what exercises would work if you know what their purpose is. Take for example running exercises. While other conditioning coaches would recommend your players to run sprints, that probably won’t do much to improve their performance. That’s because softball isn’t about running a straight line but more on changing directions quickly, running laterally, etc.
Have a Well-Designed Softball Conditioning Program
When developing a conditioning program for your players, don’t just choose exercises at random and without giving much thought on how you structure the program.
Design your softball conditioning program in a way that progresses as your players’ fitness level increases. This is to prevent overwhelming them with complicated and difficult exercises on their first few weeks of training – a period when they’re still trying to be acclimatized to your training program.
Another thing is that having a program that progresses in intensity is that it prevents your players from reaching the plateau in their training. When you push them harder with more intense exercises, your softball conditioning exercises would be much more effective.
